18. Resonance

Alignment Between the Analytical Model and the User’s Natural Way of Thinking

Definition

Resonance is the ability of an analytical model to align with the user’s mental logic, expectations, and cognitive patterns, so that the analysis makes immediate and natural sense.

A resonant model does not force the user to adapt to the data structure.
It is the model that resonates with how the user thinks.

In Power BI, resonance exists when the user:

Nature

Cognitive, semantic, and experiential.

Resonance is not technical.
It is an emergent property of the user–model relationship.

A model can be:

and still fail to resonate if its logic does not match how the user conceptualizes the business.

Function

Resonance enables:

In Power BI, resonance:

Consequence

When resonance is high:

When resonance is low:

Lack of resonance does not create errors.
It creates disconnection.

Signals of High Resonance (✔️)

Signals of Low Resonance (❌)

🔧 Samples — Resonance in Power BI

🔹 Sample 1 — Business language

❌ Low resonance:
KPIs with technical names that users do not use.

✅ High resonance:
KPIs named according to the real business vocabulary.

👉 The model speaks the way users think.

🔹 Sample 2 — Mental order

❌ Low resonance:
Dimensions and filters ordered by technical criteria.

✅ High resonance:
Order reflects how users analyze information.

👉 Structure follows the mind, not the database.

🔹 Sample 3 — Question flow

❌ Low resonance:
The dashboard answers questions users never ask.

✅ High resonance:
Each visual answers a natural and expected question.

👉 Analysis follows the thought process.

🔹 Sample 4 — Intuitive trust

❌ Low resonance:
Users constantly review and question the numbers.

✅ High resonance:
Users trust and explore without friction.

👉 Trust emerges from resonance.

🔹 Sample 5 — Anti-pattern vs Pattern

❌ Anti-pattern — Dissonant model

✅ Pattern — Resonant model

📌 Practical rule:
If users trust before validating,
the model is resonating.

Synthesis

Resonance is not designed with data alone.
It is designed with cognitive empathy.
