La naturaleza de una relación

The Nature of a Relationship

Before measuring, correlating, or predicting, we need to understand what it truly means for two variables to be related.

La pregunta central

The central question

What does it truly mean for two variables to be related?

In everyday language, two things seem related when they change together, accompany each other, move in opposite directions, or appear within the same context. In scientific analysis, that intuition must become an observable and testable statement.

Observamos un cambio en A
We observe a change in A
Buscamos un patrón en B
We look for a pattern in B
We evaluate whether the pattern is consistent, informative, and reproducible

¿Qué es una variable?

What is a variable?

A variable is a measurable or classifiable representation of a characteristic that can take different values across observations, people, places, moments, or events.

TemperaturaTemperatureCambia por lugar y momento.Changes by place and time.
VentasSalesCambian por tienda, producto y periodo.Change by store, product, and period.
Tipo de eventoEvent typeClasifica observaciones en categorías.Classifies observations into categories.
Tiempo de respuestaResponse timeCuantifica duración o retraso.Quantifies duration or delay.
Attention: the variable is not the entire phenomenon. It is a representation of the phenomenon. A poor definition can create an apparent relationship that actually belongs to the measurement process.

¿Qué es una relación entre variables?

What is a relationship between variables?

Evidence of a relationship exists when the behavior, value, or distribution of one variable changes in an organized way according to the state of another variable.

Tres niveles de observación

Three levels of observation

NivelLevelPreguntaQuestionEjemploExample
1¿Cambian juntas?Do they change together? Temperature rises and ice cream sales also rise.
2¿El patrón es consistente? Is the pattern consistent? The behavior appears across multiple days, stores, and periods.
3¿A aporta información útil sobre B?Does A provide useful information about B?Conocer la temperatura reduce la incertidumbre sobre las ventas esperadas.Knowing temperature reduces uncertainty about expected sales.

Relación matemática vs. relación física

Mathematical relationship vs. physical relationship

Two variables can display a mathematical pattern without one physically producing the other. This distinction will be essential throughout the project.

Values move together, separate in an organized way, or share a detectable structure.
A mechanism exists through which a change in A participates in producing a change in B.

Ejemplo: helados y quemaduras solares

Example: ice cream and sunburn

Both variables may increase during summer. That does not mean buying ice cream causes sunburn. A third variable—heat and sun exposure—may influence both.

Ejemplo: precio y demanda

Example: price and demand

An inverse relationship may exist, but its magnitude depends on substitutes, income, urgency, availability, and product nature. The observed relationship should not be isolated from context.

La relación como información compartida

Relationship as shared information

A powerful way to understand dependence is to ask whether knowing A changes what we expect from B.

If knowing A does not change our expectation about B, the evidence of dependence is weak or absent.

This idea will return later when we study correlation, information theory, time series, and Machine Learning models. For now, the important thing is to understand the principle, not calculate it.

Casos guiados de observación

Guided observation cases

Caso 1 — Temperatura y ventas de helado

Case 1 — Temperature and ice cream sales

Observation: as temperature rises, sales increase.

What we can say: a pattern compatible with a positive relationship exists.

What we cannot yet say: that temperature is the only cause, that the effect is linear, or that the pattern works the same in every city.

Caso 2 — Inflación y compra de leche

Case 2 — Inflation and milk purchases

Observation: purchase volume may decline while inflation rises.

Possible context: price, disposable income, substitutes, food culture, household size, and product perception.

Lesson: an observed relationship may be formed by multiple simultaneous mechanisms.

Caso 3 — Publicidad y ventas siete días después

Case 3 — Advertising and sales seven days later

Observation: changes do not occur at the same time.

Lesson: two variables may be related even when their movements are shifted in time.

Primer método de observación

First observation method

Before applying any technique, we will follow this sequence:

  1. Definir el fenómeno: qué evento o comportamiento queremos comprender.
  2. Define the phenomenon: what event or behavior we want to understand.
  4. Define the variables: how we will represent and measure the phenomenon.
  6. Observe the pattern: what changes, in what direction, and under what context.
  8. Separate evidence from explanation: distinguish what is observed from the causal story we imagine.
  9. Identificar incertidumbre: reconocer qué todavía no sabemos.
  10. Identify uncertainty: recognize what we still do not know.
  • No confundir coincidencia con causalidad.
  • Do not confuse coincidence with causality.
  • Do not assume a variable fully represents a phenomenon.
  • Do not select a technique before understanding the question.

Before measuring correlation, we need to understand what it truly means for two variables to be related. A scientific relationship does not begin with a formula, but with a well-defined observation: something changes, and we want to know whether that change provides useful information about another variable. In this first chapter, we establish the conceptual foundation of evidence-based analysis: define the phenomenon, correctly represent its variables, observe patterns, and separate mathematical evidence from a causal explanation that has not yet been demonstrated.
