Fundamental Properties of Relationships

Propiedades Fundamentales de las Relaciones

Recognizing a pattern is only the beginning. Scientific analysis asks what properties the relationship has, under which conditions it persists, and how much trust it deserves.

Central principlePrincipio centralA relationship is not defined by one coefficient or one chart. It is a structured object with multiple properties.

1. A relationship has an anatomy

1. Una relación tiene anatomía

After identifying the apparent type of relationship, the next task is to inspect its properties. Two relationships can both look positive and still differ radically in strength, shape, stability, timing, and practical meaning.

What exactly remains true about this relationship when we change the way we look at it?¿Qué permanece realmente verdadero sobre esta relación cuando cambiamos la manera de observarla?

2. Direction

2. Dirección

PositivePositivaHigher values of one variable tend to accompany higher values of the other.
NegativeNegativaHigher values of one variable tend to accompany lower values of the other.
MixedMixtaDirection changes across ranges, periods, or subgroups.
IndeterminateIndeterminadaNo consistent direction is visible at the current level of analysis.
Direction is not causation.La dirección no es causalidad. A positive pattern does not establish that increasing X will increase Y. Un patrón positivo no establece que aumentar X aumentará Y.

3. Strength

3. Fuerza

Strength describes how consistently the observations follow the apparent structure. A strong relationship has little dispersion around its form; a weak relationship has substantial variation.

Strong but conditionalFuerte pero condicionalHighly regular inside one segment, absent in another.
Weak but realDébil pero realA small signal can still matter when the outcome is important or repeated at scale.
Unstable strengthFuerza inestableThe signal changes substantially across windows or samples.

4. Form

4. Forma

Form is the geometry of the relationship. It determines what kind of method can represent the pattern without distorting it.

LinearLinealApproximately constant rate of change.Tasa de cambio aproximadamente constante.Straight-line summaries may be appropriate.
CurvedCurvaThe rate of change varies.La tasa de cambio varía.Linear summaries can understate or reverse the pattern.
ThresholdUmbralLittle happens until a critical value is reached.Ocurre poco hasta alcanzar un valor crítico.Average effects may conceal the transition.Los efectos promedio pueden ocultar la transición.
SaturationSaturaciónAdditional change has progressively less effect. Marginal interpretation is essential.La interpretación marginal es esencial.

5. Symmetry and reversibility

5. Simetría y reversibilidad

Some relationships look similar when the variables are exchanged; others do not. Prediction is usually directional: predicting Y from X is not automatically equivalent to predicting X from Y.

Common mistake:Error común: treating association as if both variables played interchangeable analytical roles. tratar la asociación como si ambas variables desempeñaran roles analíticos intercambiables.

6. Stability

6. Estabilidad

A stable relationship preserves its essential behavior across reasonable changes in time, sample, location, and operating conditions.

1TimeTiempo
2SegmentSegmento
3LocationUbicación
4ScaleEscala
5SampleMuestra

If the sign, form, or strength changes under these checks, the relationship should be reported as conditional rather than universal.

7. Temporal properties

7. Propiedades temporales

ContemporaneousContemporáneaVariables move during the same period.
LaggedRezagadaChange in one variable precedes change in another.
PersistentPersistenteThe effect or signal remains beyond the initiating period.
TransientTransitoriaThe relationship appears briefly and then disappears.La relación aparece brevemente y luego desaparece.
At what delay is the relationship strongest, and how long does it last?¿Con qué retraso es más fuerte la relación y cuánto tiempo dura?

8. Sensitivity

8. Sensibilidad

Sensitivity asks how much the relationship changes when analytical decisions change. This includes the treatment of outliers, missing values, bins, transformations, date windows, and filters.

  • Remove one influential observation and compare.
  • Eliminar una observación influyente y comparar.
  • Change the time window and compare.
  • Cambiar la ventana temporal y comparar.
  • Use raw and transformed scales.
  • Usar escalas brutas y transformadas.
  • Recalculate by relevant subgroups.
  • Recalcular por subgrupos relevantes.

9. Robustness

9. Robustez

Robustness is stronger than visual appeal. A robust relationship survives reasonable alternative specifications and does not depend entirely on one arbitrary analytical choice.

Robust does not mean permanent. A relationship can be robust within a defined context and still fail when the system changes.Robusto no significa permanente.

10. Context dependence

10. Dependencia del contexto

Relationships often belong to a place, period, population, process, or regime. Context is not background decoration; it is part of the analytical definition.

Interest rates and product sales

Tasas de interés y ventas de productos

The relationship may be strong for financed durable goods, weak for low-cost products, and absent during a major product launch.

Weather and city services

Clima y servicios municipales

Rain may increase drainage calls in one district while reducing outdoor code complaints in another.

11. Practical significance

11. Importancia práctica

A relationship can be statistically noticeable yet operationally irrelevant, or statistically modest yet highly important when it affects safety, cost, equity, or thousands of repeated decisions.

QuestionPreguntaWhy it mattersPor qué importa
How large is the change?¿Qué tan grande es el cambio?Magnitude may matter more than mere detectability.
How often does it occur?¿Con qué frecuencia ocurre?Small repeated effects can accumulate.Los efectos pequeños repetidos pueden acumularse.
Who is affected?¿A quién afecta?Average effects can conceal unequal consequences.Los efectos promedio pueden ocultar consecuencias desiguales.

12. Scale

12. Escala

Scale defines the level at which values are represented and compared. The same phenomenon can look different when expressed in raw units, percentages, indexes, standardized values, or logarithmic form.

Raw scaleEscala brutaPreserves the original measurement units.Conserva las unidades originales de medición.
Relative scaleEscala relativaExpresses change as percentages, rates, or indexes.
Standardized scaleEscala estandarizadaPlaces variables with different units on a comparable frame.
Logarithmic scaleEscala logarítmicaEmphasizes proportional change and compresses large ranges.Resalta el cambio proporcional y comprime rangos amplios.
Key idea: changing scale changes interpretation and visibility, but does not automatically change the underlying phenomenon.

13. Noise

13. Ruido

Noise is variation that does not belong to the stable structure we are trying to understand. It may come from measurement error, random fluctuation, data-entry problems, omitted context, or rare events.

Observed data = Signal + Noise
Datos observados = Señal + Ruido
Measurement noiseRuido de mediciónInstrument or recording error.Error del instrumento o del registro.
Process noiseRuido del procesoNatural fluctuation in the system.Fluctuación natural del sistema.
Contextual noiseRuido contextualUnrecorded external conditions.Condiciones externas no registradas.
Structural breakRuptura estructuralA real system change incorrectly treated as random noise.

14. Variability

14. Variabilidad

Variability describes how much observations differ around their typical behavior. Two relationships can share the same direction and form while having very different dispersion.

Low variabilityBaja variabilidadObservations remain close to the expected structure.
High variabilityAlta variabilidadThe relationship may exist but predictions are less precise.
Changing variabilityVariabilidad cambianteDispersion grows or shrinks across the range or over time.

15. Uncertainty

15. Incertidumbre

Uncertainty represents what remains unknown about the relationship because of limited data, noise, sampling, measurement, model assumptions, or changing context.

Sampling uncertaintyIncertidumbre de muestreoWould another sample produce the same pattern?¿Otra muestra produciría el mismo patrón?
Measurement uncertaintyIncertidumbre de mediciónHow accurately are the variables observed?¿Con qué precisión se observan las variables?
Structural uncertaintyIncertidumbre estructuralAre important variables or mechanisms missing?¿Faltan variables o mecanismos importantes?
Context uncertaintyIncertidumbre contextualWill the relationship remain under new conditions?¿La relación permanecerá bajo nuevas condiciones?
A responsible conclusion includes not only what we know, but also what remains uncertain.

16. Information

16. Información

Information asks how much knowing one variable changes what we expect about another. A relationship is analytically useful when it meaningfully reduces uncertainty.

Know A
Conocer A
Update expectation about B
Actualizar la expectativa sobre B

This property prepares the conceptual ground for information-theoretic methods without introducing formulas yet.

17. Redundancy

17. Redundancia

Redundancy occurs when multiple variables contribute largely the same information about the target. More variables do not always mean more knowledge.

Example: temperature-related variables

Ejemplo: variables relacionadas con temperatura

Temperature, heat index, and perceived temperature may overlap heavily. Including all three can add complexity without adding independent evidence.

Analytical consequence: redundant variables can distort interpretation, inflate apparent evidence, and complicate model selection.

18. Complexity

18. Complejidad

Complexity describes how many interacting elements, levels, conditions, and feedback mechanisms are required to represent the relationship adequately.

1SimpleSimple
2MultivariableMultivariable
3MultilevelMultinivel
4DynamicDinámica
5EmergentEmergente

Method complexity should follow phenomenon complexity. A simple relationship should not be buried under unnecessary machinery, while a complex system should not be forced into an oversimplified representation.

Chapter closing

Cierre del capítulo

Understanding a relationship means more than knowing whether two variables move together. It means describing every property that defines how the relationship behaves under different conditions: direction, intensity, form, consistency, persistence, stability, sensitivity, scale, noise, variability, robustness, uncertainty, information, redundancy, and complexity.
